Project One Cause, is a nonprofit organization that provides financial aid and educational

support for families with children affected by non-fatal drowning and hypoxic brain injuries.

NONFATAL DROWNING

Nonfatal drowning can result in long-term health challenges, costly hospital stays and expensive long-term therapies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rates.

  • For every child who dies from drowning, another eight receive emergency hospitalization care for nonfatal drowning.

  • More than 40% of drownings treated in emergency departments require hospitalization or transfer for further care.

  • Drowning injuries can cause serious outcomes, including long-term disability.

HYPOXIC BRAIN INJURY

Caused by oxygen deprivation — Hypoxic Brain Injury can result in profound neurological damage, altering the child’s ability to move, speak, see, or interact with the world. Few families are prepared for what comes next:

  • Many survivors experience spastic quadriplegia, similar to severe cerebral palsy.

  • Children are often misdiagnosed as being in a state of unresponsive wakefulness — even when they are fully aware but unable to respond.

  • Insurance rarely covers therapies like neuro-rehabilitation, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, or therapeutic riding — leaving families to shoulder overwhelming costs.

  • The average out-of-pocket cost for specialized therapy can exceed $50,000 per year, per child.

These children are often silent, but not lost. With the right interventions, many show incredible potential — but families need immediate support, guidance, and funding to access these life-changing treatments.

Early intervention can profoundly change outcomes.

Groundbreaking research by Dr. Peter Fox reveals crucial insights about the potential of children affected by anoxic brain injury. This research can guide parents and medical providers toward life-changing interventions.
